Over 60’s Happier with Massage Therapy
In the April 2011 publication of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies Vol 15 Issue 2, pages 177-185, Niki Munk and Faika Zanjani examined the “Relationship between massage therapy usage and health outcomes in older adults”
The study used a survey to measure health-related quality of life issues among adults 60 years and older who have and have not used massage therapy in the past year. Physical functioning, bodily pain, limits due to physical and emotional issues, emotional well-being, social functioning, energy/fatigue, general health, and change in health were assessed in the survery.
Those who received massage therapy in the past year had higher average scores in all areas (indicating better health) compared to those who did not, especially those who had self-reported limits due to emotional issues. The survey asked questions pertaining to ‘feeling depressed or anxious’ as examples of limitations due to emotional issues, while questions about being ‘blue’, ‘down in the dumps’, ‘downhearted’, and ‘happy’ related to emotional well-being.
It can be implied that massage therapy may improve overall health, in particular the perception of being limited by emotional health.
In the summary it was stated that “physical and emotional decline in older adults is a serious issue affecting not only quality of life but also susceptibility to injury. Non-pharmacological interventions addressing the needs of older adults are important for reducing medication burden and possible drug interactions.”
